Africa Aquatics President Hails New Era for Water Polo at Continental Championship
Harare, Zimbabwe – 11 April 2025 – In a stirring message marking the opening of Africa's premier water polo competition, Dr. Mohamed Diop, President of Africa Aquatics, celebrated the sport's growing momentum across the continent while outlining an ambitious development roadmap.
A Historic Moment for African Aquatics
Addressing team presidents, athletes, coaches and distinguished guests, Dr. Diop declared: "Today we celebrate more than just a competition. We celebrate a sport that embodies the spirit of competition, strategy, teamwork and commitment. This event showcases Africa's exceptional talents and proves our readiness to make our mark in global water polo."
Despite being unable to attend in person, the President emphasized the tournament's significance as a catalyst for growth, noting: "You are the true pioneers of this discipline on our continent, and you have my full support in your efforts to grow this sport."
Strategic Development Initiatives
The President highlighted Africa Aquatics' concrete steps to strengthen water polo infrastructure:
- December's groundbreaking coaching seminar for beginner water polo trainers
- Targeted programs to increase participating nations
- Zimbabwe and South Africa recognized as regional trailblazers
"While water polo remains underdeveloped in many African countries," Dr. Diop stated, "we have laid solid foundations through our coaching initiatives. Africa possesses extraordinary human potential – we must simply provide the tools to unlock it."
Tournament as Springboard for Growth
The competition serves multiple strategic purposes:
- High-level competition to raise playing standards
- Networking platform for federations and coaches
- Inspiration for youth participation continent-wide
"I'm confident this event will motivate countless young Africans to embrace water polo," said Dr. Diop, praising the athletes' pioneering spirit.

The President closed with a vision for the future: "Africa Aquatics remains committed to transforming water polo's trajectory across our nations. Through sustained investment and events like this championship, we will ensure our athletes shine on the world stage."
