Chad Le Clos was revealed to the world
It was in October 1995 that Juan Antonio Samaranch, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), received a delegation from the city of Moscow at the headquarters of the Olympic Committee in Lausanne. The aim of the visit of the Muscovite’s delegation was to present to the IOC President the project of organizing an Olympic Games for the young athletes. Without hesitation, Juan Antonio Samaranch approves the project and confirms its support and that of the IOC for the organization of this new international sports competition. The name of the competition was chosen among several proposals such as "Youth Olympic Games", "Olympic Games of Hope" and "World Youth Games”. Finally, the name of the World Youth Games was chosen and the Games were scheduled to take place every four years, same as for the Olympic Games. Unfortunately, not a single edition has been organized since that of 1998.

However we can say that the Youth Olym-pic Games originated from the World Youth Games. But it was only in 2010 that first edition of the Games was held in Singapore, followed by the second edition in Nanjing in 2014 and the third one that took place in 2018 in Buenos Aires.
Young African swimmers have always performed during the Youth Olympic Games and were even on the podiums. These Games have revealed future world stars such as the legendary Chad le Clos from South Africa.
From 14 to 18 July 1998 in Moscow, it was the South African breaststroker Sarah Poewe who gave to Africa its first world titles (15 years and under) in the 100m breastroke (1:10.79) and 200m breastroke (2:32.40) .
Among the boys (17 years and under) James Willcox ( 200m freestyle in 1:54.47) and Zach De Beer (200m breast-stroke in 2:22.95) won a silver and a bronze medal respectively. The South Af-rican teams came out 3rd in the 4x200m freestyle relays (8: 42.76 for the women and 7: 47.31 for the men) .
Africa finally won 2 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.
3 Olympic titles for the African youth.
During the first Olympic Youth Games (15-18 years for both Men and Women) held from 15 to 20 August in Singapore Chad Le Clos was revealed to the world with a brilliant performance: gold medal in the 200 m Individual medley (2:00.68), three silver medals respectively in the 400 m freestyle (3:51.37), 100m butterfly (53.31) and 200m butterfly (1:56.85).
