ORAN, ALGERIA — 7 May 2026 — The 17th African Swimming Championship reached its midway point on Thursday with a thunderous, double-gold day from host hero Jaouad Syoud, a thrilling Caldwell-versus-Yasser duel in the Men's 400m Freestyle, and yet another flag added to a continental medal sheet that now boasts fifteen nations across three days of racing in Oran.
From a crowd-rocking Algerian one-two in the Men's 50m Backstroke to a maiden Sudanese podium courtesy of Ziyad Saleem and a first relay gold for the host women's quartet, day three again demonstrated the breadth of the meet — even as South Africa, Egypt and Algeria continued to consolidate their positions atop the standings.
Syoud Stuns with Double Gold for Hosts
Algeria's Jaouad Syoud produced the performance of the night — and arguably of the meet — claiming gold in both the Men's 200m Breaststroke and the Men's 50m Backstroke within the space of an evening session. The host superstar first powered to victory in the 200m breast in 2:14.66 for 809 AQUA points, leading South Africa's Oliva Nicolas Lange (2:17.46) and compatriot Ramzi Chouchar (2:18.78) home in a 1-3 for Algeria. Less than an hour later he stopped the clock at 25.82 in the 50m back, edging fellow Algerian Abdellah Ardjoune (26.07) for another home one-two. Syoud now has three individual golds in three days in Oran — a tally matched only by Egypt's Youssef Ramadan.
Caldwell Edges Yasser in 400 Free Classic
The Men's 400m Freestyle delivered the closest finish of the night, with South Africa's Matthew Caldwell clocking 3:53.65 for 834 points to deny Egypt's Mohannad Yasser (3:54.01, 830 pts) by just 0.36 of a second. Algeria's Mohamed Racim Semmar (3:56.77) thrilled the home crowd with bronze ahead of Egypt's Mohamed Moselhy, while Cape Verde's Rohan Shearer (4:07.73) once again flew his nation's flag inside the senior final.
