South African Swimmers Dominate Morning Heats, Qualify for Semi-Finals at Paris 2024 Olympics

Paris, 31 July 2024 – South African swimmers showcased their prowess in this morning's heats at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with several athletes securing spots in the semi-finals with impressive performances.

Women's 200m Breaststroke

Tatjana Smith from South Africa delivered an outstanding performance in Heat 3, finishing comfortably in 1st place with a time of 2:21.57. Her dominant swim secured her a spot in the semi-finals. Joining her is fellow South African Kaylene Corbett, who finished 2nd in the same heat with a time of 2:23.85, also qualifying for the semi-finals. The South African duo's strong showing bodes well for their chances in the next round.

Men's 200m Backstroke

Heat 2 saw a stellar performance from South Africa's Pieter Coetze, who finished 1st with a time of 1:56.92, comfortably qualifying for the semi-finals. Coetze's impressive swim sets high expectations for his performance in the next round.

Other Performances

In Heat 1 of the men's 200m backstroke, Ziyad Saliem of Sudan posted a time of 2:01.44, while Denilson Cyprianos from Zimbabwe finished closely behind with a time of 2:01.91. Both swimmers demonstrated commendable efforts in their respective races.

In the women's 200m butterfly, Lia Lima of Angola competed in Heat 3, finishing with a time of 2:22.19. Although Lima did not advance to the semi-finals, her participation added to the growing representation of African swimmers at the Olympics.
