Paris, 2 August 2024 – The 2024 Paris Olympics witnessed a stirring display of resilience and talent as South Africa's Rebecca Meder set a new national record in the women's 200m individual medley semi-final. Clocking in at 2:10.67, Meder finished 5th in her heat and 11th overall, marking an extraordinary comeback after qualifying 16th for the semis.

Meder's journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting on her performance, she shared, “I think there's only a certain percentage of people who can say they got a PB at the Olympic Games and, not that I was ever going to bring this up, but just under three and a half months ago I was sitting in the hospital with a ruptured appendix, and now I'm 11th in the world at the Olympic Games.”

Her determination and drive were evident in every stroke as she powered through the water, defying the odds and exceeding expectations. “I think I set myself those scary dreams and I can either look back and go, ah, I never achieved it, or wow, I did everything I possibly could have done to try and get that dream. And it just makes me so hungry. I was seeded 20th coming in and to finish 11th overall with a PB in a semifinal, it's not quite the result I was wanting, but at the same time I couldn't have asked for more,” Meder added.

The 22-year-old swimmer’s inspirational performance is a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment. Her new national record is a shining example of what can be achieved through perseverance and hard work, even in the face of significant challenges.

Meder’s performance has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the Paris 2024 Olympics, showcasing the incredible potential and talent within African swimming. As she continues to inspire future generations, her journey from a hospital bed to the Olympic pool will be remembered as one of the most compelling stories of these Games.
