Pieter Coetze, the accomplished South African backstroker with three Commonwealth Games medals to his name, has made a pivotal decision regarding his athletic career. Rather than pursuing his academic aspirations at the University of California in the United States, he has chosen to remain in his homeland and continue his training under the guidance of his coach, Rocco Meiring.
Initially, when Coetze verbally committed to the University of California (Cal), his plan was to join the Cal campus in the fall of 2024. He intended to remain with his current club and coach in South Africa until the conclusion of the Paris Olympic Games. However, in a recent statement to SwimSwam, Coetze shared his revised perspective, stating, "I thought about it a lot and I came to the conclusion that I don't want to delay going pro and giving my full commitment to swimming by another 4 years. These last few weeks, things have felt more clear, and I am following my intuition. I will stay in Pretoria and train at Tuks."
At the age of 19, Coetze made a significant impact at the 2022 World Junior Championships, securing five medals, including a gold in the 200m backstroke and silvers in the 50m and 100m backstroke events. Notably, he has demonstrated his prowess in the senior circuit by clinching the men's 100m backstroke gold in Birmingham and earning silver and bronze in the 50m and 200m backstroke, respectively, at the Commonwealth Games.
Coetze's recent performance at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Athens has also garnered attention. He made his debut at this event and achieved gold in the 200m backstroke, triumphing over competitors like Thomas Ceccon of Italy and Roman Mityukov from Switzerland. Additionally, he claimed silver medals in the 50m and 100m backstroke events.
It's worth noting that Coetze opted out of competing at this year's World Championships, indicating his dedication to his decision to focus on his professional swimming career. We will Pieter all the best in his future indeavours.
