South Africa's Matthew Goller finishes fifth from lane eight with the second-fastest final length of the race, Tunisia's Youssef Douma comes through from a slower heat to finish sixth, and eight African swimmers from seven nations take on the men's 400m freestyle in Dakar
DAKAR, Senegal, Tuesday 3 November 2026 – Matthew Goller was handed the outside lane of the fastest heat, and he used every metre of it. The 16-year-old South African saved his best for the last length of the men's 400m freestyle at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, closing in 28.37 to finish fifth overall in 3:57.91.
Only one swimmer in the 33-strong field swam a faster final length: Saudi Arabia's Rami Bilal A Alrahmouni, who won gold in 3:47.86.
Goller was joined in the top six by Tunisia's Youssef Douma, who swam in the second-fastest heat and still beat four swimmers from the final heat to finish sixth in 3:58.77. In all, eight African swimmers from South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Sudan and Tanzania raced the event at the Complexe Tour de l'Oeuf.
As with the women's 400m freestyle on Sunday, the event was swum as a timed final, with medals and places decided on time across all five heats.
Goller: Saving The Best For Last
Goller went out in 26.82 and reached 200m in 1:57.41. He was still fifth in his heat at 350m (3:29.54), a tenth behind Argentina's Thiago Pizzini Paz. Then came the final length. Goller's 28.37 took him past Pizzini Paz, who finished in 3:59.10, and secured fourth in the fastest heat and fifth overall.
He finished 1.09 seconds behind Romania's Luca Stefan Marinescu in fourth. Russia's Bogdan Toropkin took silver in 3:50.46 and Mexico's Daniel Saborio Grillo bronze in 3:52.72.
It capped a busy start to the Games for Goller, who also raced the 100m freestyle on Monday and came home in 27.03 there, faster over the second 50m than Algerian finalist Salaheddine Torki.
Douma: Patience Rewarded
Tunisia's Youssef Douma, 17, swam in the second-fastest heat, alongside eventual silver medallist Toropkin. At 200m he was fifth in that heat in 1:58.43. From there he raced the second half better than almost anyone in the event. His second 200m of 2:00.34 was the fourth-fastest in the field, behind only the three medallists.
He moved into second in his heat by 300m (2:58.51) and finished in 3:58.77, 2.44 seconds clear of Colombia's Nicolas Kokidko. His time beat four swimmers from the fastest heat and placed him sixth overall, just 0.86 behind Goller.
Ben Ajmia, Cole And Grist Fight To The Wall
Tunisia's Mohamed Yassine Ben Ajmia, still only 14, added another event to a busy programme. He was seventh in his heat at 300m, then swam the fastest seventh length of his heat (30.70) and passed two rivals to finish fifth in the heat in 4:10.69, 22nd overall.
In the same heat, Zambia's Mulenga Cole, 17, finished in 4:13.77, 25th overall.
Zimbabwe's Connor Nicholas Grist, 17, produced one of the closing efforts of the morning. With 50m to go he was 2.75 seconds behind Honduras' Josue Matute. Grist swam his final length in 31.20, more than two and a half seconds faster than Matute's, and missed catching him by just 0.11. He finished third in his heat in 4:17.26, 27th overall.
Mwase Wins His Heat
Uganda's Mark Arthur Mwase, 17, won the first heat in 4:28.12. He shared the fastest reaction in the event (0.59) and overtook Oman's Hamed Al Hasani on the final length with a closing 32.68 to win by 1.68 seconds.
Tanzania's Zack Okumu, 15, finished third in that heat in 4:42.92. Sudan's Adam Ahmed Yacoub Ahmed, 17, making Sudan's first appearance in our Dakar 2026 coverage, finished in 4:31.48.
The Continental Picture
Two African swimmers finished in the top six of a field of 33, both with strong second halves, and the remaining six all completed one of the toughest events on the programme. No medal this time, but Goller and Douma showed that Africa's middle-distance freestyle depth is growing. The swimming programme at Dakar 2026 continues at the Complexe Tour de l'Oeuf.
