In anticipation of February’s World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar, all eyes are on Olympic gold medalist Ahmed Hafnaoui as he spearheads the competitive field for the men's 400-meter freestyle event. According to recent announcements by World Aquatics, Hafnaoui sits atop the list of contenders, showcasing his formidable prowess in the pool.

The organization unveiled the top seeds for the men’s 400 free, with Hafnaoui dominating the lineup. Joining him in the top 8 ranks are Lukas Maertens of Germany, Elijah Winnington representing Australia, Guilherme de Costa from Brazil, Woomin Kim of South Korea, Austria’s Felix Auboeck, Antonio Djakovic of Switzerland, and Petar Mitsin hailing from Bulgaria.

Hafnaoui, who captured global attention with his remarkable performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, clinching gold in the 400-meter freestyle, has continued to showcase his talent since then. Following his Olympic triumph, he embarked on a journey to the United States, enrolling at the University of Indiana for academic pursuits while honing his swimming skills.

At the previous World Championships, Hafnaoui secured gold medals in the 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle events, setting Championship and Africa Records in the latter. Despite not competing for the collegiate varsity due to academic restrictions, his training with the Hoosiers proved fruitful. Subsequently, he transitioned to training under Mark Schubert at The Swim Team in California, joining a cohort renowned for its excellence in men’s distance swimming.

Recent developments indicate that Hafnaoui is not only a top contender in the 400m free but also leads the pack in the men’s 1500m, alongside Florian Wellbrock of Germany and Daniel Wiffen from Ireland, the World Record holder in the short course 1500. Additionally, speculation arises regarding Hafnaoui's potential participation in the men’s 800, pending official confirmation from World Aquatics.

While discussions surrounding potential athlete absences loom over the upcoming Championships, the unveiled lineup for the men's 400 free reaffirms the return of seven out of eight finalists from the 2023 edition, with Hafnaoui positioned as a formidable force ready to make his mark once again on the world stage.
