Mbabane, Eswatini — The XXI Africa Aquatics Zone IV Swimming Championships burst into life this morning with a flurry of record-breaking swims, personal bests, and dominant performances that set the tone for an electrifying week of competition.
In the Girls 14 & Under 800m Freestyle, Namibia’s Vitoria De Sousa lit up the pool with a commanding victory in 9:35.23, smashing the previous championship mark of 9:43.46 set in 2018 by Seychelles’ Therese Soukup. Botswana’s Maeva Morebodi (10:34.77) and Zimbabwe’s Daniella Viki (10:35.65) rounded out the podium in a tightly contested battle for silver.
The Boys 14 & Under 800m Freestyle saw South Africa’s Johan De Beer (8:48.51) and Kyle Snyders (9:10.31) both eclipse the 2018 record of 9:11.58, underlining the depth of talent in the junior ranks. Seychelles’ Anthony Morgan claimed bronze in 9:12.13, narrowly missing the record himself.
In the Girls 15 & Over 800m Freestyle, South Africa once again flexed its distance swimming muscle. Abigail Kotze stormed to gold in 9:14.06, obliterating the old mark of 9:50.01, with teammate Zuria Venter (9:31.35) taking silver and Zimbabwe’s Alexis Johnsen (9:42.03) securing bronze — all three finishing under the previous record.
The morning’s most emphatic statement came in the Boys 15 & Over 800m Freestyle, where Namibia’s Oliver Durand (8:33.14) and Nico Esslinger (8:36.22) both powered past the 2018 record of 8:54.80. Angola’s David Alberto Padre (9:13.21) claimed third in a spirited swim.
With multiple records already rewritten and several nations sharing the podiums, the opening session has set a blistering pace for the rest of the championships. The afternoon finals promise more fireworks as sprinters, relay teams, and stroke specialists take centre stage.
The Africa Aquatics Zone IV Championships continue through the week, with over a dozen nations vying for regional supremacy and a chance to etch their names into the record books.
