Muzito Sets New National Record as African Swimmers Showcase Talent in Heats at Paris 2024 Olympics

Paris, 30 July 2024 – African swimmers continued to display their skill and determination in today's heats at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with several standout performances across various events, including a new national record.

Men's 200m Butterfly

In Heat 2 of the men's 200m butterfly, Matthew Sates from South Africa posted a strong time of 1:57.04. Although this performance was competitive, Sates narrowly missed out on advancing to the semi-finals.

Men's 100m Freestyle

The men's 100m freestyle heats saw a mix of results from African swimmers. In Heat 1, Alexian Kouma of Mali finished 4th with a time of 56.34, followed by Giorgio Kamogne from Cameroon in 6th place with a time of 1:03.42, and Hadji Hassane from Comoros in 7th place with a time of 1:07.21.

Heat 2 witnessed an impressive performance by Ovesh Purahoo from Mauritius, who secured 1st place with a time of 52.22, marking a significant achievement. Collins Saliboko from Tanzania finished 7th with a time of 53.38, while Yousef Abubaker from Libya came in 8th place with a time of 56.19.

In Heat 3, Henrique Mascarenhas of Angola posted a time of 52.52, finishing in 7th place.

Heat 4 featured Mattieu Seye from Senegal, who finished 6th with a time of 50.84, and Harry Stacey from Ghana, who finished 7th with a time of 51.12. Despite strong efforts, neither swimmer advanced to the next round.

Women's 100m Freestyle

The women's 100m freestyle heats saw notable performances from several African swimmers. In Heat 1, Paige van der Westhuizen from Zimbabwe secured 1st place with a time of 58.19, followed by Maxine Egner from Botswana, who finished 3rd with a time of 58.98. Rana Saadeldin from Sudan finished 5th with a time of 1:04.72.

In Heat 2, Nasrine Medjahed from Algeria finished 8th with a time of 57.34.

Heat 4 saw Gloria Muzito from Uganda post an impressive time of 55.95, setting a new national record. Muzito's performance highlights her potential as a competitive swimmer on the international stage.

These performances highlight the depth and talent of African swimmers, who continue to make their mark at the Paris 2024 Olympics. As the competition progresses, the continent looks forward to more exciting performances and potential breakthroughs.
