Budapest, Hungary – December 15, 2024 – Senegalese swimmers Steven Aimable and Oumy Diop delivered outstanding performances at the 17th World Aquatics Championships (25m) in Budapest, Hungary, breaking a total of four national records.
Aimable began his record-breaking spree on the second day of competition (December 12, 2024), obliterating the nine-year-old national record in the 200m Butterfly. His time of 2:01.15 eclipsed the previous record of 2:14.41, set by Ismaël Kane in Sierre, Switzerland, on November 7, 2015, by a remarkable 13 seconds.
The following day (December 13, 2024), Aimable continued his impressive form, setting a new Senegalese record in the 100m Butterfly with a time of 52.91 seconds. This performance bettered his own previous record of 53.08 seconds, established at the previous World Aquatics Championships (25m) in Melbourne on December 17, 2022.
Diop also made her mark on December 13, matching her teammate’s achievement by setting a new national record in the 100m Butterfly with a time of 1:00.77. This improved upon her previous best of 1:01.54, also set in Melbourne on December 17, 2022.
Diop wasn't finished there. On the penultimate day of the championships (December 14, 2024), she secured her second national record of the competition in the 50m Freestyle, clocking a time of 26.45 seconds. This eclipsed the six-year-old record of 26.74 seconds, held by Jeanne Boutbien since November 15, 2018, in Singapore.
