Bloomington, IN - In a recent update provided by Indiana University's head coach, Ray Looze, it has been confirmed that Ahmed Hafnaoui, the Tunisian swim sensation and reigning Olympic champion in the men's 400 freestyle, will not be competing for the Hoosiers this season.

Coach Looze expressed his pride in the accomplishments achieved with Hafnaoui during the previous season and conveyed his best wishes for the swimmer's future endeavors. "We're really proud of what we accomplished with him last year," Looze said. "We wish him nothing but success in the future. I mean that."

Hafnaoui joined the Indiana University swim team in the fall of 2023, a year after arriving in Bloomington. Although initially expected to start collegiate competition in the 2022-23 season, he was declared a partial qualifier academically and consequently sat out for the season. Despite this setback, Hafnaoui trained with Indiana and experienced remarkable success, securing two World Championship titles in the men's 800 freestyle (7:37.00) and 1500 freestyle (14:31.54) and earning silver in the 400 freestyle (3:40.70) with some of the fastest swims in history.

News surfaced in November that Hafnaoui had left the Bloomington campus and was now training with The Swim Team (TST) in California after participating in just two meets for the Hoosiers. The 21-year-old athlete, who celebrated his birthday in December, has not competed since October 25, where he produced multiple victories for Indiana in a double dual with Auburn and Mizzou.

Despite being entered to compete at the U.S. Open in December, Hafnaoui ultimately had to withdraw due to illness. The absence of the world's best distance freestyler from the Indiana men's swim team this season leaves fans curious about his future plans and potential return to collegiate competition. Coach Looze's sentiments reflect a supportive atmosphere, emphasizing the accomplishments made with Hafnaoui and expressing goodwill for the swimmer's future successes.
