Paris, 27 July 2024 – African swimmers delivered commendable performances in this morning's heats on the first day of swimming at the Olympics, showcasing their talent and determination across various events.
In the women's 100m butterfly, Oumy Diop from Senegal finished 4th in Heat 1 with a time of 1:01.82, demonstrating strong potential in a competitive field. Hayley Hoy from Eswatini came in 8th in the same heat, clocking a time of 1:08.36, gaining valuable experience on the Olympic stage. South Africa's Erin Gallagher impressed in Heat 4, finishing 6th with a time of 57.8 seconds, earning her a spot in the semi-finals and raising hopes for a podium finish.
The men's 100m breaststroke saw notable performances as well. In Heat 1, Matthew Laurens from Mozambique, narrowingly missing our on first, secured 2nd place with a time of 1:04.95, putting up a solid performance. Chadd Ning from Eswatini finished 4th in his heat with a time of 1:09.85, earning valuable experience at the elite level. In Heat 2 and with a strong competitive swim, Adrian Robinson from Botswana claimed 3rd place with a time of 1:02.79, narrowly missing out on a higher ranking.
The men's 400m freestyle heats featured strong showings from African swimmers. In Heat 1, Ilias el Fallaki from Morocco led his heat, finishing 1st with a time of 4:01.59, setting a strong example for his peers. Ridhwan Mohamed from Kenya finished 4th in the same heat with a time of 4:05.14, adding to Kenya’s growing presence in competitive swimming. In Heat 3, Ahmed Jaouadi from Tunisia earned 2nd place with an impressive time of 3:46.19, narrowingly missing out on qualification for the finals as the 9th place finisher.
The African contingent has shown remarkable progress and resilience, and their performances in these heats are a testament to their hard work and dedication. These athletes will should certainly be proud as they made their mark on the Olympic stage.
