Paris, 28 July 2024 – African swimmers continued to make their mark at the Paris 2024 Olympics with impressive performances in the semi-finals, leading to record-breaking achievements and finals qualifications.
Women's 100m Breaststroke
Tatyana Smith from South Africa delivered an outstanding performance in the second semi-final of the women's 100m breaststroke. She finished with a time of 1:05.00, securing her position as the fastest qualifier for the finals by a margin of 0.51 seconds. Smith's remarkable swim sets her up as a strong contender for a medal in the upcoming final.
Men's 100m Backstroke
In the men's 100m backstroke, Pieter Coetze of South Africa set a new African record with a time of 52.63 seconds in the second semi-final. Coetze's impressive swim earned him a joint 3rd place finish and a spot in the finals, showcasing his exceptional talent and potential for a podium finish.
Women's 200m Freestyle
Aimee Canny, also from South Africa, competed in the first semi-final of the women's 200m freestyle. She finished 6th in her heat with a time of 1:57.34, placing 12th overall.
